At what age do working dogs go from an adopted home and begin training?
Q. I'm wondering about military, police and seeing eye and other service dogs. Are males better at some jobs and bitches other? Is the age of training different for different breeds or sex? Also, I was told to wait three years before doing endurance work with sled dogs.

A. Service dogs, hearing dogs and guide dogs go to their puppy raisers at about 8 weeks and are returned to the program between 12 and 18 months for advanced training. It's the same for all breeds and both genders. Training for all working dogs begins in the whelping box with early neurological stimulation, and continues throughout the life of the dog. The puppy raising period does include training in house manners, toileting, walking nicely on a leash, sit, down, stay, come, all the basic things that would make any pet dog a lovely companion with a little extra socialization and habituation. The advanced training is job specific, but is built on the foundation laid down by the puppy raisers. The Schutzhund/police/militar y dog… [cont.]
