The dog (Canis lupus familiaris, pronounced /ˈkeɪnɨs ˈluːpəs fəˈmɪli.ɛərɨs/) is a domesticated form of the wolf, a member of the Canidae family of the order Carnivora. The term is used for both feral and pet varieties. The domestic dog has been one of the most widely kept working and companion animals in human history. The word "dog" may also mean the male of a canine species, as opposed to the word "bitch" for the female of the species. The dog quickly became ubiquitous across culture across the world, and was extremely valuable to early human settlements. For instance, it is believed that the successful emigration across the Bering Strait might not have been possible without sled dogs. Dogs perform many roles for people, such as hunting, herding, protection, assisting police and military, companionship, and, more recently, aiding handicapped individuals. This versatility, more than almost any other known animal, has given them the nickname "Man's best friend" in the western world. Currently, there are estimated to be 400 million dogs in the world. Over the 15,000 year span that the dog had been domesticated, it diverged into only a handful of landraces, groups of similar animals whose morphology and behavior have been shaped by environmental factors and functional roles. As the modern understanding of genetics developed, humans began to intentionally breed dogs for a wide range of specific traits. Through this process, the dog has developed into hundreds of varied breeds, and shows more behavioral and morphological variation than any other land mammal. For example, height measured to the withers ranges from a few inches in the Chihuahua to a few feet in the Irish Wolfhound; color varies from white through grays (usually called "blue'") to black, and browns from light (tan) to dark ("red" or "chocolate") in a wide variation of patterns; coats can be short or long, coarse-haired to wool-like, straight, curly, or smooth. It is common for most breeds to shed this coat, but non-shedding breeds are also popular. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License When is the best time to introduce dogs with a new puppy? Q. I have a new puppy (yorkie) and also have two larger, outdoor dogs. I have already let the puppy in contact with the more timid dog, he's actually afraid of her. The interaction was quick. My problem may be with my older dog. He isn't aggressive, he just wants to sniff her and play. But she's 4 lbs. and he's about 70lbs. I am planning on training classes with the puppy, the other two are already good, but if a little, yappy dog is bothering them... well, they are dogs. Should I wait until the puppy has more training and will listen better? The bigger dogs are in a dog run, so they do see her when I take her out to potty and they have met through the wire fence. I take my bigger dogs to the dog park and they are fine, they always have the… [cont.] Asked by kalamibe - Thu Oct 5 15:16:20 2006 - - 9 Answers - 1 Comments A. keep an eye on them at first but right away is best. i had a 40 pound and a 3 pound chihuahua puppy and they loved eachother. they play all the time and chased each other and chihuahua acts like the big dog and was more dominant. just watch them at first then after a couple months, then they should be fine with eachother. Answered by xsandybreezerx - Thu Oct 5 15:27:43 2006 How do you take dogs on road trips or camping? Q. I am planning on getting a dog and taking it on roadtrips like to camping. How do you take the dog on long roadtrips? What happens when they have to go? Where do the dog stay in the car? Where do dogs sleep when they camp? Tell me everything about how you camp with big dogs and little dogs. Thanks! Asked by song_monkey - Mon Dec 21 19:23:09 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. STEP 1- putting your dog in the car-Dogs often feel more safe if they are enclosed in a cage, which if its in a smaller cage you could fit it in the back seat or if its a bigger dog put it in the trunk- if the car is not a truck. That is what some people do if they don't trust there dog with the luggage. The second option is to let the dog stick its head out the window where ever it is convinent for you. Some dogs sticking there head out the window wouldnt be an option because they are not good in the car. Some dogs just lay there head down the whole time, then it would be a better idea with the cage. STEP 2-Making stops- Dogs will need to atleast walk around for a couple of minutes every 2 hours. If your taking a night trip you dont need… [cont.] Answered by pielover - Thu Dec 24 08:18:57 2009 How do you socialize a dog that is scared f other dogs?
Q. We have a dog that is about 9 months old. she hasnt had much interaction with other dogs so we are trying to socialize her with my dogs which aregood with other dogs. What is the right way to introduce her to them? how can we help her trust other dogs? Asked by Dom - Sat Mar 24 18:14:59 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Meet in a neutral place, don't bring more than 1 dog to meet with her at a time.. Allow them to smell one another while on leads and see how it goes from there. It's likely she'll pick up from the other dog if they are good around dogs, that there is nothing to worry about. Keep them on leads and walk and let them socialize and if things seem really good, absolutely no signs of aggression at all, then let the 9 month old dog off her lead, allowing her to move around and see that nothing is going to happen. If things are good, let the other dog off. Try to do this in a yard that is fenced, a smaller area so that if there is a problem you are right there so you can stop things immediately. If dogs are going to fight, they tend to run and… [cont.] Answered by DP - Sat Mar 24 18:42:02 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Dogs" The dog is a mammal in the order Carnivora.
