The dog (Canis lupus familiaris, pronounced /ˈkeɪ.nɪs ˈluːpəs fʌˈmɪliɛərɪs/) is a domesticated form of the wolf, a member of the Canidae family of the order Carnivora. The term is used for both feral and pet varieties. The domestic dog has been one of the most widely kept working and companion animals in human history. The word "dog" may also mean the male of a canine species, as opposed to the word "bitch" for the female of the species.

The dog quickly became ubiquitous across culture across the world, and was extremely valuable to early human settlements. For instance, it is believed that the successful emigration across the Bering Strait might not have been possible without sled dogs. Dogs perform many roles for people, such as hunting, herding, protection, assisting police and military, companionship, and, more recently, aiding handicapped individuals. This versatility, more than almost any other known animal, has given them the nickname "Man's best friend" in the western world. Currently, there are estimated to be 400 million dogs in the world.

Over the 15,000 year span that the dog had been domesticated, it diverged into only a handful of landraces, groups of similar animals whose morphology and behavior have been shaped by environmental factors and functional roles. As the modern understanding of genetics developed, humans began to intentionally breed dogs for a wide range of specific traits. Through this process, the dog has developed into hundreds of varied breeds, and shows more behavioral and morphological variation than any other land mammal. For example, height measured to the withers ranges from a few inches in the Chihuahua to a few feet in the Irish Wolfhound; color varies from white through grays (usually called "blue'") to black, and browns from light (tan) to dark ("red" or "chocolate") in a wide variation of patterns; coats can be short or long, coarse-haired to wool-like, straight, curly, or smooth. It is common for most breeds to shed this coat, but non-shedding breeds are also popular.

What do dog fighters generally do with the ears of the dogs they intend to fight?
Q. I saw a pit-bull type dog at the shelter with ears that were docked very short to the head. Does this indicate that this dog was used or was intended to be used for dog fighting? What do dog fighters do with the ears of the dogs anyway? In old days didn't they used to dock them real close to the head?

A. Most people who get "fighting" breeds crop the ears with no intent on fighting. It just gives the dog a mean, watchdog look (even though they can be super sweet). But since it is at a shelter, why don't you see the staff if they know anything? I kind of doubt it because then it would probably have aggression problems with other dogs and all shelter dogs are tested for that.

What breed of dogs are comparable to Golden Retrievers and labs in personality?
Q. I love Golden Retrievers but I would like to get into another breed. My mother in law has labs so I would like something different. I don't care if it is a small dog or a big dog but I love the personality of Golden and I can not find a dog that is as perfect as a Golden. I want it to be good with kids and all people and other animals, dogs and cats alike. I want it to be loving and loyal and very playful. I want it to be sweet and gentle. Is there such a dog?

How Do I Train My Dog to Be Under Control Around Other Dogs?
Q. I have a Jack Russell Terrier, just over a year old. I live in an apartment complex where a lot of people own dogs. When I am walking my dog and he spots another dog, he wildly tries to pull me in that direction. If the dog is close, my dog lets out loud shrill screams and continues to try to pull me. It is almost impossible to control and its embarassing. Other than that he is very well behaved for a JRT and he is real smart. Just a little wild in certain situations, this being the worst. So what can I do to control this behavior? he's not aggressive in a mean way. He just is curious I think and wants to play. But he plays rough with other dogs like wrestling around and nipping (no intent to hurt). If I let him check out the… [cont.]

A. And then what happens? When he gets closer to the other dog, does he just say Hi and sniff ? Most JRT I've met are friendly. I'm not sure if you're saying the problem is aggression, or you just don't like his excited approach. Okay, I just read your added comment. I think you need to arrange with other owners to let the dogs play together off-leash. Find some enclosed place where the dogs can be let loose and let them play. It looks rough to humans, but among dogs, it's just play. There's a lot of chasing and mock-biting. Choose dogs his own size. I don't think your dog did anything wrong. I would not punish him.

The dog is a mammal in the order Carnivora. Dogs were first domesticated from wolves at least 17,000 years ago, but perhaps as early as 150,000 years ago based upon recent genetic fossil and DNA evidence. In this time, the dog has developed into hundreds of breeds with a great degree of variation.

I’ll do anything for you.” Whether a dog can in fact, do anything for you if you don’t have sheep (I never have) is another matter. The dog is willing.
