dog park??
Q. when i took my lab to the dog park she had a great time. but she drooled a lot...she never really drools normally. before we went she didn't and when we got back she had stopped... do you think that it was caused by excitement??? (( other than that she has acted completely normal!))

A. This happens all the time with dogs at the dog park. She was probably just really tired from running. Usually when dogs run around at the dog park they get really drooly. It's absolutely nothing to worry about.

How do I get my dog to obey me at the dog park when she is around other dogs?
Q. My dog obey's me ok at home and at the dog park. That is until we get around other dogs. Once she starts running around with other dogs, she completely ignores me. It's ok that she runs around with other dogs and they all play well together, but I need to make sure she stays some what close to me and will come when called. Any suggestions on how to get her to obey a "come" command when she's around other dogs?
Asked by irbk - Mon Nov 19 15:37:31 2007 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments

A. a really reliable recall is necessary without distraction before she can be expected to come with distractions. practice with only one other dog at first so that you can go get her if necessary. high value rewards are critical for success. and calling her to come only when you're ready to leave sends the message that coming means the fun is over. call her over to you several times before actually leaving so she can learn that coming is a good thing and she can still play. always praise when she comes (even if she did not come on her own). and do not call her to come when you can't enforce the command. see the link for help getting started.

How come they never built a dog park in my area?
Q. Park authorities held a few meetings about building a dog park in my area 2 years ago, and they got to the conclusion that they were going to build one, but they never did! they said they were going to in May 2005, but now it's 2007 and they're not even building it yet! I have to travel 45 minutes every 2 week to bring my dog to the dog park nearest us to let him have some fun, but now it's getting to be kind of a hassle. Do you have any idea why it's not even being built yet?

Q. My dog is a spayed 1 year old GSD mix who is friendly with dogs but when ever i take her to the dog park she freaks out whining and pulling on the lead. She used to barked in a very high pitch but has stopped that. Is there any way can get her to stop whining, and pulling/lunging outside of the dog park?

A. In my best professional judgement as a dog trainer trainee and from persona experience as well the following would be my suggestions: lf the dog needs to be leashed practice the focus cue at home first. Then, try first in a driveway or quiet street before going to the park. Be certain the dog knows how to focus, use any word you choose, (now.here, watch me and the like) Then start at the park during off peak times when you and your dog can be alone. Use a 50 foot lead and teach her to come. The dog whisper by paul owens is excellent (do not confuse with the other book same title but different author) Also consider the cd version. So then when you take her to the dog park where leashes are not necessary unless you want to. However,… [cont.]

What is the best dog park to go to in Los Angeles County and why?
Q. Which one is most popular? Is Laurel Canyon nice? How bout Runyon dog park? Also which one do all the celebrities go to?
Asked by AgilityObsessed - Fri Sep 18 23:36:32 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Ah, another celebrity stalker. There's no single dog park where all the celebs go. In fact, very few go to one at all. Spotting a celeb at any one of the dog parks is about as common as seeing one on the street, which is very rare indeed. I think it's a toss up between Runyon Canyon, Laurel Canyon, or Silverlake. Heck, it's just a fenced-off area where the dogs can run free. Nothing particularly exciting about any of them, except that you can let your dog run free and meet other dog lovers.

How and to who do I report someone at a dog park?
Q. In order to break up a dog fight, a man kicked my puppy and sent him flying then whipped him with a leash. Then he accused me of neglect and not watching my dog. He threatened to call animal services on me. I've seen things like this happen all the time at the dog park. If this ever does happen to me again should I call the police or animal services? Will they respond and what will they do to help me?
Asked by Nick M - Wed Sep 3 23:05:11 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They may respond but they won't have any proof, the damage needs to be clearly seen on the dog. If it happens... do call animal control and hope fully the person will get a fine

How do you feel about taking your dog to a dog park?
Q. We live in a wonderful neighborhood and all of the kids love our yellow lab. but there is a dog park less than 2miles away. our backyard is okay but i think he would enjoy running freely in a much larger open space. But a friend of mines says dog parks are a bad idea, what do you guys think?
Asked by Meka - Mon Apr 9 15:46:01 2007 - - 18 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Check to see if the dog park has rules about aggressive dogs being banned or that dogs must have shots up to date, etc. If all checks out, they are GREAT!! Good exercise for the dogs and wonderful chance to socialize with other dogs as well. Plus you can meet other dog lovers there and make new friends! Just visit it once first WITHOUT your dog and see if it looks clean, safe, etc. Then, hopefully, HAVE FUN!

A. Yeah i noticed that too, dogs are always there around lunch. Probably becuase people have their lunch break. but i recomend around lunch time, so that your dog can interact with other dogs, and you get to see many cute faces. and that time of day is not too cold or too hot :)

What should I do if my dog gets into a dog fight at the park? Best way to handle this situation?
Q. My dog is a large mixed breed year and a half year old neutered well socialized with a great temperment dog. Just this weekend though things changed. Showing dominance in the dog park and acting like he doesn't understand or hear any commands he's had no problems with until now. I just want to know the right corrective actions to take so we can happily get through the adolescent stage of his life.

A. I have a terrier mix who has similar issues. We got him when he was a year old from the shelter. He loved to go to the dog park and play, never had any problems. Then, one day just over a year and a half old, he suddenly decided that every dog he knew prior to that moment was his friend, and every new dog was not his friend. If a dog he did not know prior to "switch on" came into the park, he would go right after it. I have two dogs, and we still go to the park. However now my shepherd who has no issues goes in with my girlfriend, and my terrier mix stays outside the fence with me. I will let him meet dogs through the fence, and if he has no problems with them I will bring him in. If he shows signs (tail up and stiff, hair… [cont.]

When can you take your dog to the dog park and why is it good for dogs to go there?
Q. I am debating on taking my puppy (8 month old beagle) to the dog park. Is he off the leash in there? I'm afraid I'd have to chase him around. Why is it good for dogs to go there?
Asked by <3 - Thu Nov 1 18:35:00 2007 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Some are on leash, some off depends. I agree totally dogs need dog socialization. I have had too many run ins with rude dogs and ruder owners though. I just won't do it any more. At 8m I would worry that a bad experience with a rude or aggressive dog would do more harm then it is worth risking if it was me. I meet enough dog owners walking around with mine and often talk to them. It is a much better way for me to judge if they have good control of their dog and if they would make good playmates that way, without the free for all you get at a dog run.

A. fabulous idea. i am working on that idea w/my own city. first contact your local city councilman/woman and see if they can help you set up a proposal. contact some breed clubs in your area and your neighbors to get ppl on board to support your idea. you would then present your proposal before the city council and they would vote.

A. You can bring your dog to a dog shelter, a pet store, you can advertise for a puppy nursery school at your house. theyre all great suggestions, but the dog shelters probably best because the dogs are really lonely, scared, and sad. they'd be thrilled if someone just came and played with them for a little bit.

Why does my dog not play with other dogs at the park but she does when we are at home?
Q. My dog is a female German Shepard and is 3 years old. She is friendly, bit hyper and loves to play. At home she will play with any dog that comes over and she has a great time. But when we go to a dog park she just ignores all the other dogs and never socializes or go up to them or anything just stays with us and wants a ball or something to play with.
Asked by Marriedcat - Mon Feb 12 16:34:07 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's very possible that it has to do with shyness and territory. Maybe she feels more comfortable playing with dogs in her territory, in her area. Maybe when you put her in a strange location, with strange animals, it's too many "new" things all at once and it scares her a little. Or it could be that she's worried about her masters and wants to stay near them and keep an eye on them. While we may never figure out your Shepard's reasoning, I think it is fairly safe to say that there is no point in taking her to a dog park if she doesn't enjoy. Just invite her friends over if it's not a problem. :)

Why do you think some people go to the dog park dressed in good clothes?
Q. Today was rainy and my dog was getting a bit muddy when 3 people showed up with their dogs. They were dressed as if they had been to church (it was Saturday though) and I worried that my dog would jump up on them, but she didn't. I asked if they were new to the park and they asked how I knew so I told them that most people wear old clothes and they were lucky my dog was being so good. It was a family of 2 adults and one kid. I doubt they were trying to pick up anyone. We chatted very nicely and I gave them some tips because a lot of the time there are up to 30 dogs there and I wanted them to be prepared next time so they could have a good experience taking their dogs there.

How would I Approach My Town Board of Directors About building a Community Dog Park?
Q. I Would like get a dog park built in the community that i live in. There are several places that would be ideal but there are "No Dogs Allowed" Signs there. I live in an area where there is allot of nature and wild spaces, but we still need a "Un-leashed" area for the community. I feel it would bring a sence of community amongst the town dog owners. The question is, What are the proper channels i must go through to get this into action.?

Should they have a Law, that your dog must be fixed before entering a dog park?
Q. I was at the dog park yesterday, and there was this male mixed breed dog, who was obviously NOT fixed. (Very easy to tell, you could just see.) And this dog was trying to Mount every dog he could! Now, doesn't an unfixed dog with an unfixed female = unwanted puppies? Shouldn't they make it a law your dog must be fixed? What would happen if a female dog wasn't fixed, and then the male dog got her pregnant? There would be more unwanted puppies. What do you think? Am I right, Or Am I Wrong?

Asked by Eazy_mf_E - Tue Mar 25 21:27:37 2008 - - 30 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Absolutely! If she is not spayed she can become pregnant at that age if she connects with a male dog. If this is an off leash park it really wouldn't be a good idea to take her until she is fully out of her heat cycle. If you are not planing on breeding her please have her spayed ASAP. It will keep this from happening as well as eliminate the possibility of uterine cancer/infection, ovarian cancer and drastically reduce the possibility of mammary cancer.
