The colocynth, also known as bitter apple, bitter cucumber, egusi, or vine of Sodom, is a viny plant native to the Mediterranean Basin and Asia, especially Turkey (especially in regions such as İzmir), Nubia, and Trieste. It originally bore the scientific name Colocynthis citrullus, but is now classified as Citrullus colocynthis.

Growth

Its fruit, which is lemon-sized, yellowish, green-mottled, spongy, and extremely bitter, is a powerful hepatic stimulant and hydragogue cathartic. It is used as a strong laxative. In overdoses, the fruit can cause violent, sharp pains in the bowels, with dangerous inflammation. Given that the colocynth grows wild in region of Israel, these symptoms would be consistent with the "wild gourd" mentioned in 2 Kings 4:39-40. It is seldom used alone, but in combination with other cathartics has been a standard remedy. It has been used alone in obstinate edema, amenorrhea, and in cerebral derangements. A normal dose of fluid extracted from the fruit pulp is 2 to 5 minims, and for the powdered extract, 1 to 2 grains.

How can I get my new ferret kit to quit nipping and biting? Bitter apple made it worse.?
Q. Bought a training guide and the ferret's behavor got worse!

A. Ferret kits are like any other baby. They learn by their senses and their most available way to learn is their mouth. Nipping and biting is normal for baby ferrets. What you need to do as their "parent" is to teach them what is okay and what is not. If a ferret bites too hard then the best thing to do is immediately scruff them (this is grasping them by the excess skin on the top of their neck) and dragging them along the floor a short distance, saying in a firm but not screaming tone to "No bite." You can also add a hiss noise - that is a ferret "back off" sound. It may take a few times and as your ferret grows he may challenge your teaching. Just be consistent and it will learn not to bite. Another way to give another option to the… [cont.]

How well does that bitter apple spray work for dogs?
Q. How well does that bitter apple spray work for dogs?

A. I've heard it worked well for some dogs so I got it for my VERY stubborn lab... After she had licked all the bitter taste off of what I sprayed...she began to chew again. Lol I'd say it varies from dog to dog. Best bet is to buy "Dog training for dummies" Look up the chewing section and learn from there. i love that book!

Have you tried bitter apple or other products to deter dogs from chewing?
Q. I read on the ASPCA website that a good way to curb aggressive chewers tendencies to demolish household items was to use one of those products. What I am wondering is if anyone else has tried it, and what is your opinion on the effectiveness of it?
Asked by KKingS - Mon Apr 9 21:40:51 2007 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I tried it and it didn't work for sh!t. My dog has separation anxiety though. What we do is to switch out her toys every so often. Dogs get bored with the same old toys so new ones are always exciting. We also have certain toys (her favorites) that she only gets when we leave. We also give her cardboard boxes and stuffed animals (from Good Will...VERY cheap) she absolutely LOVES cereal boxes and empty toilet paper rolls. Plastic pop bottles are great toys too, we shove treats into them so she has something to work at when we leave. I wouldn't suggest the plastic stuff though if your dog swallows what it chews. My dogs don't swallow, they chew things up and spit out the pieces. Good luck!
